Introduced in 1971, the AKG C414 is the most-versatile large-diaphragm condenser in regular use. Five polar patterns, three pads, three high-pass filters. The C414 is the “blank-check” mic for a working studio — point it at almost anything and it’ll work.
The C414 has five selectable polar patterns: omni, wide cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid, and figure-8. Plus three high-pass filter settings and three pad settings. It’s an “everything” mic. Modern variants include the C414 XLS (transparent voicing), the C414 XLII (slight presence boost for vocals, more like the vintage C12), and the C214 (cardioid-only budget version at ~$500).
The XLII version has a gentle 3kHz lift that flatters vocals and acoustic guitar. The XLS is flatter and more natural. Both are “modern” sounding compared to a vintage U47 — clean, fast, and unfussy.
