Neumann TLM 103 — the home-studio dream Neumann

The TLM 103 is the entry-level Neumann that working pros and serious project studios actually buy. Single-pattern, transformerless (that’s the “TLM”), ~$1,200 new. The mic that puts genuine Neumann sound into a home studio without the U87 price tag.

What it is

Single-pattern, transformerless, the K103 capsule

The TLM 103 uses a single capsule (the K103) and a transformerless circuit, both of which simplify the build and the price compared to the multi-pattern U87. The result is a mic that delivers a substantial chunk of the Neumann house sound at about a third the cost.

How it sounds

Bright, clear, ultra-low self-noise

The TLM 103 is a touch brighter and slightly more present than a U87 — many engineers prefer it for spoken-word and broadcast voice. It also has the lowest self-noise of any Neumann (7 dBA), which is why audiobook narrators love it.
