Lavalier microphones — the little clip-on body mic

Anyone who’s watched the local news, a TED Talk, a Broadway show, or a YouTube interview has seen a lavalier microphone. They’re tiny, they hide well, and they let the speaker walk around freely while staying mic’d up.

What they are

The little clip-on body mic

A lavalier microphone — also called a lapel mic, a body mic, or just a “lav” — is a tiny condenser microphone meant to be clipped to a shirt or jacket near the speaker’s collar. It connects either by cable or, more commonly today, to a wireless transmitter clipped to a belt or pocket.

The names worth knowing

Should you pick a lavalier?

When lavalier wins

Pick a lavalier whenYou’re shooting video where the subject needs to move (or where you don’t want a mic in the shot). You’re running an event where the speaker can’t hold a handheld. You’re doing run-and-gun YouTube interviews.
Pick something else whenYou’re podcasting at a desk. A boom-mounted SM7B sounds dramatically better than even a great lavalier when you’re sitting still.
